Green Smoothie Lovin'

Green smoothies are an invaluable addition  to your daily menu in the winter.  At a time when our bodies are likely to be confronted with colds and flu, green smoothies provide incredibly effective protection.  Overall, green smoothies  provide incredibly effective protection. Overall, green smoothies are alkalising, cleansing, energising, healing and highly nutritious because the ingredients are largely raw and still contain a lot of their life force (the nutrients present at the time of picking).

But what is the "green" in a green smoothie? Basically, a green is any leafy green that can be wrapped around your finger, and is safe to eat.  These greens will provide you with vitamins, minerals, fibre and the best blood builder - chlorophyll.  Unlike a juice they are finely blended so are still a whole food as nothing has been removed in the blending process.  Digestion is then much faster than normal allowing all the goodness to get to your blood stream quicker.

Add fruits, nuts and superfoods to this and you have a recipe for success.  Superfoods bring with them exceptional benefits due to their high concentration of nutrients which support and increase the immune system's ability to work better than ever.  It is important to remember when first taking superfoods to start with small amounts and increase over time.  Most packaging with give you a serving size but if in doubt ask one of our store naturopaths for some advice.

Start with 2-3 leaves of a dark leafy green like kale, spinach or silverbeet.  Add to that one apple and water and blend in a sturdy blender.  This can then be built on by adding as many fruits and superfoods as you like.

A great alternative to fresh greens is any of our green superfood powders including Lifestream Ultimate Greens.  It gives you all the amazing benefits of fresh greens because it contains powdered spirulina, barley grass and chlorella.

Try a green smoothie and notice how nourished and energised you feel.
