Resisting Winter Ailments
Winter is a time when many of us come back into our body with
a thump. We are reminded of the importance of sleep, warmth, nutritious food and that our body truly is the temple within which we reside. We need to clear our gutters, make sure drainage systems are working, insulate and nourish. Ensure you are having regular bowel motions to take pressure off the glandular/ lymphatic system. Porridge for breakfast with LSA, is a great way to increase fibre and nutrition in the morning to keep you regular and supply sustained energy. Sinus congestion with sniffles and coughs are prevalent in this season, so foods which clear these passages are extremely helpful – horseradish, chillies, garlic, ginger are invaluable. Herbal tonics including Echinacea, Astragulus and Olive Leaf can build our blood so our defence systems are intact and optimised. Malcolm Harker has a range of great herbal tonics that work as builders to the body as well as treatments if you become unwell. Ask the Naturopath which is right for you. Keeping warm is of course essential during winter, both in the home and out in the world. Be aware of the level of humidity in your home and work environment. Bugs thrive in environments of low temperature and low humidity, so if you are running heaters that are turned off when you are out, it may pay to use humidifying tactics on your arrival home. Burning oils in a water-filled burner can help, as would hydrosol sprays. Some oil heaters have a place for water to evaporate into the air. This is chance to add immune boosting and antiseptic essential oils such as lemon, eucalyptus, black pepper and lavender. Again, ask the Naturopath for some suggestions. Winter is the season to be spent in the home, with family, friends and loved ones. Laughter is one of the greatest immune boosting, stress releasing exercises we can partake in, so break out the board games, make some hot toddies and enjoy some good movies with good health and good cheer. |
